Reclaimed Resawn Barnwood Box Beam Fireplace Mantels

An alternative to solid reclaimed barn wood mantels is by building a hollow box beam mantel. Doing so allows you far greater precision in the final mantel dimensions. A box beam fireplace mantel is lighter and easier to install as well. Consider a box beam mantel when tolerances of your installation are more exacting and where you need more control over the final look. We make box beam fireplace mantels in all of our wood materials, including; hand hewn barn wood, rough sawn barn wood, and newly harvested wood like our European white oak.

Resawn reclaimed barnwood fireplace mantel

"Resawn" is the term used when the beam is 're-sawn' to cut away the original face 'skin'. We use the original face skin of either hand hewn or rough sawn beams to make box beams, flooring, or a number of other custom products. As well, it could also refer to the method by which the original timber was dimensioned using a bandsaw as opposed to a circular saw (the latter would then be called rough sawn or circle sawn).

The solid core that remains is the resawn core.

In days-of-old, this resawn material often had heavy bandsaw chatter marks from the blade skipping or from a bent tooth. Our state of the art machines however leave very little if any chatter marks behind, leaving a smooth surface. There is generally much less--if any--aged patina on a resawn beam as these have been cut recently.

For a resawn box beam fireplace mantel we cut another 'skin' of material away from the resawn beam core, engineer it to 9-ply Baltic Birch for strength, and create the box beam mantel from these rigid panels. The material can be left as-is, or we can additionally sand the surface and even apply a clear or custom color stained finish to it if you choose. If you'd like your resawn box beam to be sanded even smoother and have a custom stain/finish applied then please do not order here, instead; please contact us for a special order so we can discuss the finish process with you.

What are box beams?

Box beams are hollow beams made from the skins of solid beams. Not to be confused with a faux beam which in our vernacular means new wood, hand distressed, hand colored to make them appear vintage. Our resawn box beam mantels are authentic in their century-old age which is important if you are looking for that tight grain and density only old growth wood can offer. Box beams are most commonly seen as architectural elements for ceilings.

Box beams are handmade and like the timber they come from; no two are exactly alike. Box beams made for your project will coordinate with each other.

Our reclaimed box beam mantels are made with antique reclaimed barn wood beams and push your design over the top. Box beams fireplace mantels offer the look of solid beams with the benefits of custom sizing and lightweight installation.

We hand make box beam mantels for your project in rough sawn, hand hewn, and Resawn which is the antique wood that remains once the outer patina skins have been removed.

Box beams replicate the look of solid timber but have an improved workability and practicality: they’re uniform in size throughout the length of the beam, are available in any length and width combination, are lighter and easier to install than solid beams.
